The Audi e-tron GT is a response to an accusation. Not so long ago, Germany’s Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Peter Altmaier, criticised German car makers for making boring looking electric cars. So, at the LA motor show Audi has gone out of its way to prove to Herr Altmaier that German manufacturers can do sexy like Tesla.

According to Audi, the EV concept car is almost ready for production and will be in showrooms in 2020. That isn’t too long to wait for what some are saying is one of Audi’s most stunning cars. However, what the Audi e-tron GT really is is a less elongated and more aggressive A7.

And it is already going to be a film star. Robert Downey Jr was a VIP guest at the LA show, not because he’s a A-lister name, but because the Audi e-tron GT is going to be in the next film in the Avengers series – Avengers 4.

The e-tron GT is based on the same J1 platform that will underpin the Porsche Taycan. It’s powered by two synchronous electric motors, one for each axle, thereby making it four-wheel drive, and the combined power output is 582bhp, which gives the driver 0-62mph/100kmh in 3.5sec and a top speed of149mph/240kmh.

Audi is keen to allay any fears about how far one can drive ona fully-charged battery: the e-tron GT will have a range of nearly 250 miles/ 402 kilometres with its 90kwh battery pack, which Audi believes is the minimum range customers will accept. Moreover, if owners can find a charging point compatible with its 800v charging system it’s possible to reach 80 per cent charge (200 miles/322 kilometres) in around 20 minutes. There will also be a wireless charging setup installed in an owner’s garage.

Audi wants to have a fleet of 12 electric cars by 2025, and the Audi e-tron GT will be its flagship. With four doors and four comfortable seats it promises to be a highly usable car – and here’s the ultimate in being on trend – no animal based products have been used in the cabin, so it has a totally vegan interior.
