Bentley has announced a world first; a new Continental GT with a three-way revolving dashboard, which is something of an homage to James Bond’s revolving number plate on his Aston Martin DB5, which featured in “Goldfinger.”
The dashboard has been described as a clever “Toblerone-like device” with three sides and the driver can choose which one to view. The new model will go on sale next year and will be built exclusively in the UK.
There are other new features in this Bentley Continental GT, but the revolving dashboard is the one preoccupying everyone who has seen the car. As The Mail reports: “At first glance the fascia of the sporty new Bentley displays a clear smooth wood veneer. But fire up the engine and the middle of the dash ‘glides silently forward and rotates’ to reveal a 12.3-inch display screen with three ‘windows’ for navigation, telephone and general media. At the flick of a switch, the driver can spin it again to reveal a third ‘face’ – showing three analogue dials displaying outside temperature, a compass and a chronometer.”
The bespoke mechanism is made up of 40 components, according to the Bentley spokesperson, who added: “Small electric drive motors linked to a series of tiny gear-boxes are controlled by a dedicated electronic control unit or ‘brain.” It also has three separate linked motions, which are required to facilitate the rotation whilst still guarding extremely tight tolerances—less than 0.5mm for each of the three faces: “‘The first moves the unit in to the dashboard to provide clearance for the second stage – rotation – before the unit is then moved back in to a flush position.”
The system also has cooling fans built into it that manage screen and motor temperatures. Bentley is calling it “the most technologically advanced Bentley ever” and are hoping that its touch of ‘007 magic’ will appeal to drivers.
The Bentley Continental GT has been one of the manufacturer’s most popular models and some 66,000 have been sold since 2003. But none of its GTs have quite the amount of technology as this one does. It has 2,300 circuit boards, five miles of wiring (8km), 92 electronic control units and 100 million lines of computer code, which is a shocking 15 times more than you’ll find in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
This Bentley Continental GT will go on show at Frankfurt this month and will go into production in December. Wolfgang Dürheimer, CEO of Bentley Motors, said: “Bentley has been at the forefront of luxury Grand Touring for nearly one hundred years. The new, third-generation Continental GT is the pinnacle of our design and engineering achievements and marks the next step in Bentley’s journey.”
