Hyundai is getting 2019 off to a ‘walking’ start as it reveals its car with legs. It seems from a cursory glance at the motoring press that this is going to be a year when we will see a number of unusual concept cars at the upcoming motor shows, with ‘flying’ cars being another futuristic sector set to entertain us.

Hyundai’s model is called The Elevate, and visitors will be able to se it at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week. This Ultimate Mobility Vehicle has been fitted with four robotic legs attached to the wheels so that it can walk over really difficult terrain. Each wheeled limb has four joints, meaning it’s the first car to have knees and hips designed to strut across harsh terrains.

As the Daily Mail reports, the nearest thing to The Elevate is an AT-AT (All Terrain Armoured Transport) Walker from the Star Wars franchise. We are indeed in uncharted motoring territory when a model can only be compared to a ‘machine’ from a film set on another planet.

According to Hyundai, the legs will “This vehicle combines the power of robotics and EV technology to take people where no vehicle has been before.” Perhaps they mean it will take you to another world! The Korean car maker added, “The four-legged Hyundai ‘Elevate’ will redefine our perception of vehicular mobility.”

Although Hyundai has released few details as yet, we do now that The Elevate it is powered by electricity and guided by robotics, which suggests it should have some autonomous driving – or walking – elements.

However, Hyundai’s offroader already has some competition from Suzuki, which is about to preview two modified version of the Jimny SUV, which will debut at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon from 11th January. The Jimny Sierra shows what a pick-up version of the SUV would look like with an open load bay at the back. It will be accompanied by the Jimny Survive, which converts the family 4×4 into a rugged van. However, the standard Jimny is expected to be one of the “standout” releases from 2018 that will do well in the market this year.
