Around 12 cars were up for the gong for UK Car of the Year 2019. The panel of judges, all motoring experts who were asked to drive the cars for a year, voted the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace as the Car of the Year 2019.
The cars cars entered in the competition were tested on a number of parameters, “with the zero-emissions SUV getting the nod over other esteemed British cars, including the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Continental GT.” Newer cars hoping to be named Car of the Year 2019 included the “Alpine A110 sports car, the Volvo XC40 SUV and Suzuki’s bargain Jimny 4X4.”
John Challen, director of the UK Car of the Year Awards, said the Jaguar I-Pace was a worthy winner of the 2019 prize, as it was at the head of the contenders for practical, usable and great looking electric vehicles. In his speech while presenting the award, he said, “As manufacturers take electric vehicles more seriously, Jaguar is leading the pack with I-Pace, which offers fantastic range and performance as well as a stylish and spacious interior for driver and passengers.” He added, “The UK Car of the Year Awards judges are always keen to recognise innovation and that is certainly the case in 2019.”
The I-Pace can accelerate from a standing start to 62mph/ 100 kmh in 4.5 seconds and onto a top speed of 124mph/ 200 kmh. More importantly for potential customers, it’s also has a claimed range of up to 292 miles/ 470 km on a single charge, and can be charged to 80 per cent battery capacity in 40 minutes from a 100kW DC charger.
Jonny Smith, one of the judges, who also appears on Channel 5 show Fifth Gear, said: “Few traditional manufacturers can match the I-Pace for ground-up groundbreaking design and tech. It’s a wonderful combo of unique design, spirited driving behaviour and useful EV range/rapid charge capability.”
Rawdon Glover, Jaguar Land Rover MD, said on collecting the UK Car of the Year 2019 award: “This latest major award for I-Pace is something we can all be extremely proud of. This car was conceived, designed and engineered in Britain, so to have a selection of the nation’s leading automotive journalists vote it as the overall UK Car of the Year against some stiff competition is a special moment for us.”
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan won the prize for the Luxury Car section and the Bentley Continental GT won the Best Coupé award.
