UK

The United Kingdom is an island of such diversity that a journey from one end to the other– from Land’s End to John o’ Groats to be exact—will take you through a time capsule of history from the native-built Stonehenge, the Viking invasion, the Imperial legacy of the Romans, through the magnificent cathedrals of the Middle Ages and the grandiose Victorian edifices, and on into the 21st century where you’ll discover the Angel of the North and the Shard soaring over the river Thames. Then, there is the Celtic heritage that underpins it all; from the Welsh mountains to the Highland lochs and into the Glens of Antrim, you will discover scenery that is not just beautiful, it is simply stunning.

No visit to the UK is complete without at least one or two days in the capital London. Whether you are fascinated by history, by literature and art, or you simply want to shop, then London has something for everyone, including Buckingham Palace and all the other royal residences dotted around the capital from Hampton Court to Greenwich. Edinburgh is undoubtedly one of the most gracious and elegant cities in Europe, and it is home to the hugely popular annual Edinburgh Festival. It also happens to be the city with the most Michelin starred restaurants outside of London. Birmingham has gone through a dramatic revival and is an excellent location for exploring the Midlands, or getting to Stratford upon Avon, birthplace of Shakespeare. Manchester is a cosmopolitan city and a great starting point to begin a journey through the beautiful Lake District, whilst back in Scotland, Glasgow has become a ‘must visit’ centre for art lovers.

The UK’s roads are well maintained and there are some fabulous driving routes, both long and short. The southwest counties of Somerset, Cornwall and Devon are picture perfect and something British, such as a Jaguar F Type will look stylish in these counties. Or, take a comfortable Range Rover Evoque on a drive through the Lake District and across the Pennines to York and Durham. And, in the heart of England, visit the home of Aston Martin at Gaydon in Warwickshire in an Aston Martin Vanquish – what else!

London

There are few histories to rival London for the wealth of experiences it offers visitors. At every turn you are confronted with the history of this city that is actually two cities in one -- Westminster and the City of London – one of which controls political power and the other holds the purse strings of the world.

There is so much choice in London that you can spend a lifetime here and never experience it all, but for the visitor, the essence of London is its fabulous West End theatre, its art galleries and the British Museum, not forgetting the countless other specialist museums of South Kensington. The dining is world-class, the shopping is world-renowned and there are hotels that combine luxury with a great history; the Savoy, Dorchester and Claridge’s are three worth visiting, if only for afternoon tea or a cocktail.

Edinburgh

This beautiful and elegant city is the perfect base for starting an exploration of Scotland. Its Old Town is a charming warren of ‘wynds’, which is the local name word for a lane and the visitor will discover top class restaurants and exclusive boutiques on this part of the city. Princes Street, the city’s main thoroughfare, is as grand a street to walk along as any in Paris, and you’ll find an excellent collection of shops and attractions as you stroll the length of it.

Edinburgh Castle is an essential sightseeing destination and the Royal Yacht Britannia offers an intriguing insight into the floating holiday home of the British Royal family that was decommissioned in 1997. Drive out f city and you can explore the Lochs and Rosslyn chapel that featured in Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code.” There is also a fine selection of bars and restaurants from the more traditional to the contemporary.

Birmingham

The UK’s second largest city is going through something of a growth spurt and is turning onto a city destination that can now compete with all the others. Located in the heart of what was Victorian Industrial England, Birmingham has struggled to have a more alluring image, but with its restored Victorian building, its new Metro system and its Mailbox and Bullring shopping malls, plus the Selfridges building, it is fast featuring in ‘Top City to Live’ lists.

Birmingham is a city of gold and chocolate you might say, and two of its most notable attractions are its Jewellery Quarter and Cadbury World, which is just about the next best thing to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The city has formed a Creative Quarter in the renovated Custard Factory and Birmingham’s Museum and Art Gallery has an impressive Pre-Raphaelite collection.

Manchester

The powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution is enjoying a revival as a city of culture as much as commerce and its museums and art galleries, plus its shopping and restaurants, make Manchester an exciting city to visit.

Glasgow

Scotland’s second city has shrugged off its industrial past to reinvent itself as a leading cultural centre with exceptional art galleries and a reputation for cutting-edge cuisine.
