The McLaren GT 2019 may the British firm’s best supercar for everyday use. As our readers know, the British manufacturer is primarily associated with Formula 1 cars, but in recent years it has made some inroads into the ‘road’ sector. The new GT is powered by McLaren’s powerful new 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine which develops a hefty 620 horse-power, equivalent to six Ford Fiestas and gives it a whopping top speed of 203 miles per hour, 327 kmh. As Ray Massey writes in the Daily Mail’s Motoring section, “I was bowled over by the gorgeous, aerodynamic lines that are elegantly sophisticated rather than shouty and beautiful rather than brash.”
It certainly provides some drama with its uplifting winged or ‘dihedral’ doors. The winged doors have been ‘optimised for use in a tight space’ but you’ll still need just over 10ft width of parking space (a sizeable 129 inches or 3,286mm) if both you and your passenger are to get out.
Massey says, in his typical style, “With impeccable manners and typically British understatement (in supercar terms anyway) this smart Surrey-boy from Woking can certainly give those snake hipped Italian rivals a run for their money in the charm department – and is 130kg lighter than its nearest competitor.”
McLaren bosses stress that this is the their first true venture into the Grand Tourer market that the GT is arguably its most useable and engaging car to date and entirely suitable for everyday use. It will certainly open eyes on an early morning school run. McLaren also says that it is able to boast a super-lightweight body, as well as competition levels of performance, and “continent-crossing capability,” which presumably means it is pretty comfortable for a long road trip.
The McLaren GT is being produced at the firm’s Surrey home in Woking, alongside “the firm’s full-on Sports, Super and Ultimate series supercars and shares the same ‘DNA’ as the McLaren’s £2million hybrid GT Speedtail, with the promise of outstanding ride comfort and cabin refinement,” as Massey reports.
The new McLaren GT is the fourth and latest car in the British firm’s Track25 business plan which will see £1.2bn invested in 18 news models with a view to helping it remain a strong and independent part of the McLaren Group.
And if you opt for the Luxe pack version (Practicality and Premium pacs are also available), it has a NASA-designed super-tough and easy to clean ‘SuperFabric’ luggage bay floor liner; power-adjusted and heated memory comfort seats; power-adjusted steering column; soft-grain Analine and leather interior, and piano gloss black interior surrounds.
