It’s really quite easy to define a cabriolet – it’s a car with a roof that folds down. The term originally referred to a horse-drawn carriage with folding leather hood and in the course of time, motor manufacturers adopted the name for soft-top automobiles. Many people also simply refer to it as a ‘convertible’ but undoubtedly when it comes to naming a car model, ‘cabriolet’ has rather more cache than plain, old ‘convertible.’ Although, there are always exceptions to the rule and some European brands such as Audi show preference for the ‘cabriolet’ while BMW opts for ‘convertible.’ And, just to add another term to the mix, there are those who call this type of car a ‘roadster’. But, the key feature that unites them is the opportunity to drive in the sun with the wind in your hair, although you may be surprised to learn that soft-top cars are actually more popular in cooler climates where the possibility of sunburn is less likely.
In the earlier days of the cabriolet models it was often the case that they gave a less pleasant driving experience than those with a fixed metal roof because the removal of the top gave the car too much ‘flex’. However, that issue has been resolved and most new models also have better noise insulation. Due to the continued popularity of the cabriolet there’s a great range of choices available from Aston Martin, BMW, Jaguar, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes, McLaren and Porsche, and at Titanium Luxury Hire we have some of their most exciting cabriolet models on the market just waiting for you to get behind the wheel.
